Diary Of A Medical Nobody

Diary Of A Medical Nobody

The Practice was started in the 1850s by Dr Alfred Waugh, grandfather of Evelyn Waugh. By the 1920s there was a partnership of three. This was unusual in a time when there was much competition, bitterness and infighting between Doctors. This period was recorded in the delightful books by Dr Kenneth Lane: his “Diary of a Medical Nobody” is on a par with James Herriott’s books and well worth a read.

The original Partnership was disrupted by the unexpected death of Dr David Carter who worked in the villages of Chilcompton and Stratton-on-the-Fosse. Following this for 25 years the Chilcompton Surgery was run as a separate single-handed Practice. The remaining partnership became known as St Chad’s Surgery in the 1960s when a surgery was built on St Chad’s Avenue. In 1988 we moved to a new purpose-built surgery on Gullock Tyning.

In October 2002 following the retirement of Dr Howard Rose, the practice as Chilcompton was bought by the existing partnership thus recreating the original practice area.
